This year, for the A to Z Blogging Challenge, I'm writing Micro Fiction (or Flash Fiction) that is 100 words or less around a set list of words provided by my BFF (Kemari Howell). Today's letter is "E", so today E is for Elephant.
An Elephant Never Forgets
Eric lingered in the dark doorway of their nursery. His eyes
roamed over the empty crib, the silent rocking chair, the packages of stacked diapers,
and his feet. His laces were frayed and knotted—his shoes no longer lucky.
The room still smelled of paint and fresh linen, but not the
powders or lotions dreams are made of.
Eric plucked a tiny elephant from the shelf, turning it over
in his hand. Intricately carved by his great grandfather, it was smaller than
he remembered. He wouldn’t be passing it on today, but he hoped he would see it
again, soon.

Feel free to leave your short pieces of fiction (<100 words) in the comments below. The word for today is Elephant.
That is the saddest thing I've read in a long time. Beautifully rendered and perfect showing. *sniff*
ReplyDeletethank you Laura :-)
DeleteSo small and heartfelt, just as your story.
ReplyDeleteps~If you visit my way, my stories are attached to letters 'A', 'B', and 'D'. The other two are images and a few words.
Nice to meet you!
This story reminds me of the other one "Baby shoes for sale, Never worn."

Thank you Elayne. I have to check out your flash.
DeleteI used to have a board game called An Elephant Never Forgets when I was little! It was my favorite! Something about memory and fake money, can't remember the rest of it. I've looked for the game to get my kids, but they don't make it anymore :(
ReplyDeleteThanks for the follow at Falling for Fiction, nice to meet you!
