Not Your Typical #CYOA Story

If you haven't heard of Choose or Die, you're missing out--it's an insane interactive reader/writer experience. The website sells it to you by evoking some sort of childhood nostalgia.
Once upon a time (don’t all good stories start that way?), young adult readers of the mid-to-late 80s had far more power than they have now.  They had the power to determine the fates of the characters in the books they read.  I won’t name the franchise of books that foolishly gave these young readers so much power, but let’s just say the reader was asked several times during the course of the story to “make a choice” regarding the direction of the “adventure.”
Now that we have grown up, we find ourselves stripped of power and slave to the whims of the writers who think they know better than us what should happen next in a story.  Don’t tell me there haven’t been times you’ve put a book down and wished the author would have called you and consulted with you about that fork in the road.  If only that had happened, the book wouldn’t have sucked so bad, think you.
Well, I think it’s time, finally, to give you back the power to make the next call.
Choose or Die is just that place – but wait, before you become too jubilant and drunk on your own remembered power, there are a few things you should know.

With all great power comes great responsibilities.... right? Here's the skinny directly from the Choose or Die website--how it works:
  • Majority rules.
  • You’ll be introduced to a new story, and, of course, at a particularly heady junction in the action, you’ll be asked to make a choice.  But you aren’t alone.  Your fellow readers are also making choices.  Lo and behold, you are now engaged in a battle of wills.  The more people that choose the option you favor, the better chance you have to see your option advanced in the story.  However, if your favorite choice is not preferred by the majority, you will suffer the disappointment of the loser.
  • If you lose, you die.
  • You won’t always win.  Don’t worry.  The losing choices will be addressed, too – but not the way you want.  Beware the pitfalls of being in the minority, because grisly fates await.  Of course, you can always recruit more readers to slant the voting your way . . .
  • There are a lot of Scribblers here.
  •  Every episode, you’ll be introduced to a different Scribbler, a writer chosen for their propensity towards the humorous and ridiculous.  The style may be a little different from day to day.  We like to keep things interesting around here.
  • It’s very likely that multiple tales are being told.
  • Don’t get lost.  Again, we like to keep things interesting, and Scribblers don’t appreciate standing around, waiting on majority rule.
The story is fast paced and completely unpredictable--even the writers have no clue as to where it's going. Once the weekly chapter is posted, the readers vote--the next writer doesn't know what he (or she) is writing until after the votes have been tabulated. Then, he (or she)  has to write the next chapter. The other two options--the losing ones--are written and spit out the same week. These "kills" will likely blow your mind. The "Crew" are little mad-scientists, looking to kill you off in unexpected ways (last season I wrote a death by chicken wing). This way, you can see what would've happened if you chose one of the losing options--although, no one will know if you fib and say you chose something else.

You'll also notice that the writers like to leave awkward options at the end of each chapter, making it difficult for the next writer to pick up where the story left off, so believe me when I say a good time will be had by all. *insert evil laugh here*

Now, we are on the brink of Season Four, and we're ready to get this ball rolling. As the reader you can help pick this season's story by visiting the website, and VOTING on the story that you'd like to see on Choose or Die. There are quite a few options, but be sure to read them all--some will definitely surprise you (and possibly offend you--if the writers are doing their jobs right).

We've had a blast with previous seasons. Here are the links to past stories, so you can read them start-to-finish, choosing your favorite options along the way. There's other cool stuff on the website--like video trailers made by the ridiculously talented Steven Novak and information on all of the writers taking part in this season as well as past seasons.

It's definitely been fun, and I can't wait until we officially kick off Season Four, so GO VOTE NOW :-)

Freakin' Q

Sorry Folks! I'm throwing in the towel on the A to Z Challenge. I'd personally like to blame "Q". My world for Q was Quagmire, and I just couldn't take it seriously. I couldn't get past that goofy dude from Family Guy. He totally ruined my mojo--which was going pretty well until then.

Ok, maybe I've been a little busy too.

ANYway, I wish you all the best of luck, and if I can get some time, I'll try to catch up on reading your awesome A to Z blogs.

So long A to Z Challenge May we meet again next year.

P is for Perspiration: "Habanero Tears" #AtoZChallenge

This year, for the A to Z Blogging Challenge, I'm writing Micro Fiction (or Flash Fiction) that is 100 words or less around a set list of words provided by my BFF (Kemari Howell). Today's letter is "P", so today  P is for Perspiration.

Habanero Tears

Sweat dripped off the tip of Paul’s nose as he prepared his stomach for the last Habanero pepper. Pressing it to his lips, he glanced at the photograph above the bar—just one more, and he would steal the all-time record from his old man.

He took a breath and closed his eyes, saying a little prayer. Then it was gone—the last pepper he would ever eat. The crowd went wild, as he pumped his fists in the air, tears rolling down his face.

“He would’ve been proud,” the barkeep said, handing him the old photograph. “You earned it.”

Oh No She Dih'ent

Olivia clicked “report this photo” one last time before exiting her Facebook account for the evening. “That’ll teach that bitch to post photos of cupcakes while I’m dieting,” she grumbled, stomping out of her room.

Neon Impressions #AtoZChallenge

This year, for the A to Z Blogging Challenge, I'm writing Micro Fiction (or Flash Fiction) that is 100 words or less around a set list of words provided by my BFF (Kemari Howell). Today's letter is "N", so today N is for Neon.

Neon Impressions

The cameraman followed Nicole’s every move as she prepared for the night’s date with Bachelor Number One, “Try to pretend I’m not here,” He said.

“That’s easier said than done,” she smiled, curling her hair.

The night was a disaster—Bachelor Number One talked too much about himself, insisted that they split the check, and put the moves on her in the parking lot. In her reflection, Nicole said, “What a waste of time! I think his shoes made more of an impression.”

“His shoes?” The cameraman asked.

“They were neon green.”

“No. My shoes are.”

“Oh.” She blushed.

Marigold #AtoZChallenge #Late

This year, for the A to Z Blogging Challenge, I'm writing Micro Fiction (or Flash Fiction) that is 100 words or less around a set list of words provided by my BFF (Kemari Howell). Today's letter is "M", so today M is for Marigold.

Marigold

Sometimes, it’s hard for me to tell where the land meets the sky—both are equally grey and heavy with ash. I view it only through my picture window—perfect drifts of dirty clouds as far as the eye can see.

Inside is much the same—cold and melancholy. Many survivors have withdrawn to their private spaces to avoid small talk and fake smiles, but I’m still hopeful. In my room, I hide a packet of marigold seeds. I pray that one day they will grow and forever break this cycle of grey.

Lamp Light Dreams #AtoZChallenge #Late

This year, for the A to Z Blogging Challenge, I'm writing Micro Fiction (or Flash Fiction) that is 100 words or less around a set list of words provided by my BFF (Kemari Howell). Today's letter is "L", so today L is for Lamp.

Lamp Light Dreams

“It’s magic, Lauren, “he told her, plugging the lamp in next to her bed.

She crossed her arms over her chest, trapping Mr. Bear in a headlock. “Why can’t I just sleep with you, Daddy?”

“You can’t always run away from your problems, Sweet Pea.” He turned off the light and sat down on the bed next to her. “Look,” he said, flipping the lamp’s switch.

Lauren gasped at the shadow of a massive warrior on her wall—sword drawn—ready for battle. “It is magic,” she whispered.

“Goodnight.” He kissed her forehead.

“Sweet dreams?” she smiled.

“Sweet dreams.”

K is for Kangaroo

“This better be good, Kane” I grumbled into my phone—half asleep.

“Dude, you’re never going to believe where I am. Guess.”

“My brain isn’t working yet. Why are you whispering?”

“I’m hiding… in a bathroom… at the zoo.”

“That’s awesome.  I’m going back to…”

“Don’t hang up! There’s a kangaroo in here.”

“What?”

“A kangaroo! I think he’s washing his hands.” He giggled.

“Whatever.” I hung up on him. A minute later, my phone beeped. I pulled up the text—a photo—a freaking kangaroo. I buried my head under a pillow and tossed the phone across the room.

Impatience #AtoZChallenge

This year, for the A to Z Blogging Challenge, I'm writing Micro Fiction (or Flash Fiction) that is 100 words or less around a set list of words provided by my BFF (Kemari Howell). Today's letter is "I", so today I is for Institute.

Impatience

For the past week, Ignacio stalked the postman on Cooper Street, awaiting a reply from The International Institute of Underwater Basket Weaving. He postmarked his application before its due date, but still no word from the school regarding his acceptance.

At first he casually checked the mail at his convenience, but as the weeks went by, he became more aggressive.

“You, there, in the bushes,” the postman growled. Ignacio crawled out and dusted off his jeans. “Your package came today.”

“Thanks,” he said, ripping it open. After a long sigh, he smiled.

His parents were going to be pissed.

Handsy

Hannah choked momentarily, coughed, and pushed the morsel back into her mouth. She shook her head in disgust as Paul’s life dripped from her chin. So damn eager… too bad really. He was cute.

Ok, this may be cheating just a lil bit... this is a re-post from 2010, but I changed the character's name to fit with the A to Z theme.

Garbage Disposal #AtoZChallenge (Late)

A Day Late!
This year, for the A to Z Blogging Challenge, I'm writing Micro Fiction (or Flash Fiction) that is 100 words or less around a set list of words provided by my BFF (Kemari Howell). Today's letter is "G", so today G is for Garbage.

Garbage Disposal

Gia sat in the empty gallery surrounded by beautiful bows and sparkling wrapping paper. Mascara stained the front of her Marchesa gown.

She sobbed quietly into a bouquet of the whitest azeleas.

Everything would go back, except the flowers and the dress. Much like her heart, they were soiled beyond repair.

Falafel? #AtoZChallenge

This year, for the A to Z Blogging Challenge, I'm writing Micro Fiction (or Flash Fiction) that is 100 words or less around a set list of words provided by my BFF (Kemari Howell). Today's letter is "F", so today F is for Falafel.

Falafel?

The food court is the worst place to eat lunch on a Friday, but there I was, standing in line like the rest of the dumbasses at Eat-A-Pita, stomach rumbling.

“What’s the hold-up?” I grumbled into my BFF, Fiona’s ear.

“New guy, I think,” she shrugged.

“I’m starving.”

As we neared the front of the line, there was most definitely a “new guy”. Tall, dark, and OMG—the pin on his uniform, in bold letters, read: ASK ME ABOUT MY BALLS.

“Hi,” he said with a big-ass smile.

“Um… Hi,” I blushed. “Falafel?”

Fiona laughed—I died a little.

An Elephant Never Forgets #AtoZChallenge

This year, for the A to Z Blogging Challenge, I'm writing Micro Fiction (or Flash Fiction) that is 100 words or less around a set list of words provided by my BFF (Kemari Howell). Today's letter is "E", so today E is for Elephant.

An Elephant Never Forgets

Eric lingered in the dark doorway of their nursery. His eyes roamed over the empty crib, the silent rocking chair, the packages of stacked diapers, and his feet. His laces were frayed and knotted—his shoes no longer lucky.

The room still smelled of paint and fresh linen, but not the powders or lotions dreams are made of.

Eric plucked a tiny elephant from the shelf, turning it over in his hand. Intricately carved by his great grandfather, it was smaller than he remembered. He wouldn’t be passing it on today, but he hoped he would see it again, soon.

Self Diagnostics #AtoZChallenge

This year I'm writing Micro Fiction (or Flash Fiction) that is 100 words or less around a set list of words provided by my BFF (Kemari Howell). Today's letter is "D", so today D is for Delusional.

Self Diagnostics
The World Wide Web: Feeding Delusions since 1993

Dagby hunched over her laptop, throwing shadows across her bedroom walls. Her husband’s snoring masked the hum of her computer as she tapped the keys, searching her symptoms.

Headache, nausea, fatigue… pain.

She glanced at the wound on her arm—even in the dark, it looked angry.

I hate cats.

She continued to read, stopping occasionally to feel her face or take a deep breath.

Progressive symptoms include: anxiety, confusion, terror.

She looked around in the dark—heart racing.

Hallucinations, paralysis, DEATH!

She slammed the lid shut and pulled the covers up over her head. Tomorrow she’d call her doctor.

This year I'm writing Micro Fiction (or Flash Fiction) that is 100 words or less around a set list of words provided by my BFF (Kemari Howell). Today's letter is "C", so today C is for Champagne

Champagne Wishes

I told her it was champagne—the ginger ale. She giggled, saying the bubbles tickled her nose and complimented my refined taste.

She had a glass at dinner, another with dessert, and another on the patio of my apartment.

“Chance,” she said, grabbing my hand as she wobbled on bare feet, “You’re not trying to get me drunk, are you?” Her doe eyes twinkled with a thousand stars.

“Of course not.” I smiled, leaning in for a kiss—the ginger ale sweet on her lips.

Squeezing my hand, she pulled me inside. I closed the door.

Happy Birthday, Beefcake! #AtoZchallenge

I don't think I formally announced that I'm participating in the A to Z Challenge this month--my bad. I had a lot of fun last year with it, so I thought I'd do it again. This year I'm writing Micro Fiction (or Flash Fiction) that is 100 words or less around a set list of words provided by my BFF (Kemari Howell). Today's letter is "B", so today B is for Beefcake.

Happy Birthday, Beefcake!

Baylor stood backstage, sweating in leather chaps and not much else. Thankfully, his friends let him wear a mask to hide his embarrassment and/or horror—he hadn’t decided which just yet. Unfortunately, the inside of Ronald Regan’s plastic façade was muggy and smelled of tacos and spearmint gum.

“I can’t do this.” He said, sneaking a peek at the crowd.

“Good evening,” the announcer boomed. “Shady Acre's Retirement Center would like to welcome Mr. Beefcake 2012!”

Baylor swallowed hard as three sets of hands pushed him through the velvet curtains onto the stage. “Happy Birthday, Beefcake!” they said, laughing.

One Brown Acorn #AtoZChallenge

Kicking off the A to Z Challenge this month: A is for Acorn. A special thank you goes out to my six-year old, Brynn, who suggested the acorn and the quest of a squirrel who just wants to make friends.

One Brown Acorn

Alex twirled the acorn in his little squirrely hands. Western Oklahoma promised adventure, but he only found disappointment and loneliness.  He missed home—his parents were back east. With one brown acorn, Alex was determined to get back to his family.

He traded the acorn for a pen, a pen for a biscuit, a biscuit for a carrot, a carrot for a ride plus some pocket lint, the pocket lint for a skateboard, and a skateboard for the most magnificent red paperclip.  Standing on the doorstep of his childhood home, Alex traded a red paperclip for his mother’s embrace.

Lucky Seven--Untitled WIP

It's been a while since I've posted, so I'd like to thank Eric Krause for tagging me in this little "game" of  Lucky Seven.

So here are the rules:

1. Go to page 77 in your current manuscript
2. Go to line 7
3. Copy down the next seven lines as they are – no cheating
4. Tag 7 other authors (Done on Facebook)

Being one of the Great Procrastinators, this manuscript is unfinished and currently less than 77 pages, so keeping with the meme, I will use page 7. Currently this Work-in-Progress is Untitled (YA):

The Marges weren’t the only nurses in the ward. There were also the Rebeccas. The Rebeccas were ridiculously attractive and far outnumbered by Marges. Rebeccas were perfect. They had wavy, dark hair pulled back into loose pony tails, while stray hairs fell softly around their flawless faces. They smiled and time stood still—scrubs looked fashionable.

I wanted to be a Rebecca—so beautiful, whimsical, and flirty—never trashy. I could imagine Marge as trashy, hanging out in some dive bar with a long skinny cigarette pinched between her yellow teeth. Violating a beer bottle in her right hand, the other rested firmly on her hip. I could picture Marge on Jerry Springer, slinging her fist, shouting, “Bitch! That’s my man!”

Shhh! It Happens!

I don't think I've written a #FridayFlash this year, so I thought I'd take part this week (sleep deprived), using the #fictionfriday prompt:

[Fiction] Friday Challenge #207 for May 13th, 2011

Your Main Character finds the paperwork on the desk covered in red ink…..

It's suppose to be rough, so here it goes...

"Shhh! It Happens!"

From my bedroom, the distant buzz of my morning alarm roused me from a deep, dreamless sleep. Stretching back in my chair, I pried the spit-glued paperwork from my face.

Red ink covered my hands, desk, and the front of my button-down blouse.

“Shit,” I groaned, wiggling my mouse to check the time. “Shit!” I slammed my hands on the desk, pushing back in my chair. Attempting to stand, I fell—hitting my head on the desk.

Frantically, I rubbed at the pins and needles attacking my sleeping feet while also dodging the slobbery mouth of my 80lb pup, “No! Stop! Ugh... No, Titus!”

I pushed him away, crawling desperately toward the bathroom. He wasted no time in retaliating, attempting to dominate my compromised position. “Ugh… NO TITUS! Gross! Down!”

Threatening to kick my massive mutt, I made it through the bathroom door.

In and out of the shower; I grabbed my toothbrush and wiped a wet hand across the fogged mirror. “Shit…”

While I took the time to scrub the ink from my hands and arms, red covered my face. Unaware of this new artistic talent, I stared at the crude depiction of a penis across my right cheek and chin.

“Ugh,” I rubbed at the ink to no avail. “I’m calling in.”

Stepping over Titus, I stomped off to bedroom and crawled under the covers of my more-than-inviting bed.
